SHILLONG: With an aim to address the issue of influx of ‘outsiders and immigrants’, the state government has asked the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to keep provisions for the entry and exit checkpoints in the proposed toll gate along the National Higway-40 (Guwahati-Shillong road).

Informing this here on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said a formal request in this connection had already been made to NHAI.

“This is a part of Government’s ‘comprehensive measures’ to address the issue of influx,” Sangma said after reviewing the progress of the ongoing 4-laning of the GS road (NH 40) with PWD (Roads) minister, S Dhar, NHAI officials and Ri Bhoi district officials.

To ensure the smooth flow of traffic on the highway, the Chief Minister said that a decision was taken to construct flyovers at Nongpoh and other highly inhabited areas.

A special auditing of the four laning project would be done, he said adding that the government also decided to improve drainage system.
