Shillong: The office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills district, Khliehriat, will organize a sports coaching camp for children under different age groups in eight different sports discipline. The categories include – Football (under 14 and 17 years), Athletics (under 14 and 17 years), Badminton (under 19), Table Tennis (under 15), Boxing (under 18), Taekwondo (under 17), Karate (under 17), Basketball (under 17). Individuals interested are requested to submit their names to the office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hill Khliehriat on or before August 25. Chess competition
Shillong: Zenith Jubelieth Club, Laban will be organizing the All Shillong Nirendra Kumar Roy Memorial school-level Chess Competition on August 30 and 31 at the club premises. The club informed that the game will be played according to the Swiss system. The players are requested to bring their own chessboard and chessmen. Mudgal committee members England-bound to quiz cricketers
New Delhi: The Supreme Court-appointed IPL probe committee members, headed by Retd Justice Mukul Mudgal, is likely to leave for England within a few days to talk to a few members of the Indian cricket team regarding betting and spot-fixing scandal during IPL-6. Deputy DG of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and chief investigating officer of the panel B B Misra along with Justice Mudgal are due to fly to London for investigation purposes, sources said. “They are likely to be there for four days and effectively have a couple of sittings with some of the Indian cricketers during their stay over there,” the sources told PTI on conditions of anonymity. The first ODI will be played in Bristol on August 25. The Mudgal committee is expected to submit an interim report to the Supreme Court on August 27 where they might just appeal for an extension for submission of final report. (PTI)
Mohun Bagan recommends Samar Banerjee’s name for Padma Shri
Kolkata: Mohun Bagan have recommended former India captain Samar ‘Badru’ Banerjee for the Padma Shri award. Mohun Bagan have sent the recommendation to the President Pranab Mukherjee, Union Sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal and to the AIFF president Praful Patel. “We’ve proposed his name for conferring the prestigious Award for his excellence and contribution to football,” Mohun Bagan stated in a release. Popularly known as Badru Banerjee, he captained India at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics where they finished fourth, their best finish ever. Banerjee had an illustrious career for Mohun Bagan since 1952 and won his first major title, Durand Cup in 1953 and scored the winner against Hyderabad Police in their 2-1 win. He also won the the IFA League and IFA Shield in 1954, in 1955 they won the Rovers Cup and again in 1956 won the Shield. (PTI)
Delhi Dynamos sign world’s tallest goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout
New Delhi: Delhi Dynamos FC has signed Belgian goalkeeper Kristof Van Hout for the inaugural season of the Hero Indian Super League. An accomplished custodian, Van Hout played for Belgian powerhouse Racing Genk last season. At 6ft10 (2.08m), Van Hout also has the distinction of being the tallest professional football player in the world, making him an imposing figure at the goalpost. At the age of 27, he is at the peak of his footballing prowess and will have plenty to offer to the club. Van Hout burst on to the scene in 2008, becoming the hero of Kortrijk after saving three penalties in the shootout against league champions Standard Liege to help his team progress to the quarterfinals. This earned him a transfer to none other than Standard Liege itself, with whom he won the Belgian Cup in 2010-11. Van Hout was on the bench for Liege’s matches in the Champions League, including two games against Premier League giants Arsenal. In 2012, Van Hout made the move to another Belgian superclub, Racing Genk, one year after the club sold prodigious talent Thibaut Courtois to Chelsea. (PTI)
Jamaica to host round one of Hockey World League
Kingston: Jamaica will be hosting round one of the Hockey World League at the newly-laid multi-million dollar artificial turf at the Mona Hockey Field in St Andrew from Sep 30 to Oct 5. The tournament will feature Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Venezuela, Dominican Republic and host Jamaica. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey World League is split into four rounds that will last over a two-year cycle. The first cycle World League will serve as the qualifier for the World Cup and in the next cycle it is the qualifier for the Olympics. Jamaica Hockey Federation’s organising committee chairman Victor Tomlinson said the tournament will raise the profile of the sport in Jamaica. Jamaica’s newly laid artificial hockey turf has been installed at a cost in excess of $25 million. (IANS)
Bolt cruises to victory in season’s first 100m race
Rio De Janeiro: Sprint superstar Usain Bolt won his first 100 metre race of the season on a beach here clocking in a time of 10.06 seconds Bolt cruised to victory on a four-lane standard running track set up on the Leme beach ahead of Mark Lewis-Francis of Britain, Jefferson Liberato Lucindo of Brazil and Wallace Spearmon of the US here Monday, reports CMC. The Olympic champion and world record holder who was injury-stricken earlier this season, was running his first 100 metres since September last year. (IANS)
