Meghalaya Cong split wide open
SHILLONG: There is no denying that trouble is brewing in the ruling Congress in Meghalaya as the loyalists of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and the dissidents are heading for a showdown.
The pro-Mukul group on Saturday claimed that dissident camp did not have the majority to dislodge the Chief Minister.
According to sources close to pro-Mukul group, the dissident camp, led by MPCC chief DD Lapang, has only 6 to 7 members.
“The anti-Mukul group does not have the mandate and leadership is mandated by the numbers,” sources said.
Talks are going on in the pro-Mukul group that some sort of disciplinary measures should be taken against the dissidents.
Meanwhile, some media reports claimed the Chief Minister on Friday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and secured her backing.
Sangma’s Cabinet reshuffle proposal also got Sonia’s nod, reports said adding that there is a move to drop three dissident ministers — Prestone Tynsong, HDR Lyngdoh and Deborah Marak — from the Cabinet.
When contacted, Deborah Marak said that she did not have any information regarding such a move.
