SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is losing his ground due to the ongoing dissidence in ruling Congress which has rocked the state once again.
Sources on Thursday said that anti-Mukul group received a boost when former chief minister Salseng C Marak joined it .
For nearly two months now, several legislators, both from the pro and anti-Mukul Sangma camps, have been frequently flying to New Delhi in a bid to seek audience with AICC leaders to bolster their prospects.
On Wednesday, the State Congress chief DD Lapang, Salseng Marak and Transport Minister HDR Lyngdoh met Sonia Gandhi in Delhi.
The rift within the party surfaced during the Lok Sabha election when some party legislators and ministers openly worked against Vincent H. Pala, the official Congress candidate from Shillong parliamentary constituency.
“The State may witness change of guard any time,” sources said adding that the Chief Minister is refusing to call the meeting of Congress Legislature Party (CLP). “If a CLP meeting is called, then the Chief Minister may find himself in a spot of bother,” sources said.
Sources also said that the Chief Minister should have kept SC Marak in his side instead of ignoring him.
The source also informed that Marak has many followers in the party. However, pro-Mukul group claims that the rebel group does not have the mandate as they have only 6-7 members. “There will be no change in state leadership and AICC Chief Sonia Gandhi has also said that she will take right decision,” a leader from the pro-Mukul group said on Thursday.
