Mechukha valley cut off from rest of world due to landslide

Itanagar: The picturesque Mechukha valley in West Siang District has been completely cut-off from the rest of the world as large portions of Mechukha-Aalo road, the only link that connects this landlocked tourist hotspot with the rest of the country, was washed away in several locations due to incessant monsoon rains. The magnitude of damages is so extensive that the restoration work even at war footing will take at least two to three week time, Local MLA Passang Dorjee Sona informed on Saturday. Reportedly, passenger as well as heavy vehicles like trucks that carry essential supplies to Mechukha and its nearby areas are all stranded in various locations along the Mechukha-Aalo road. (PTI)

USD 48,700 seized in Mizoram

Aizawl: In an operation conducted by the 39th battalion of Assam Rifles, USD 48,700 were seized and one person was arrested near Zanlawn village on Mizoram-Assam border in Kolasib district. Personnel of the 39th Assam Rifles and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted a vehicle last night and seized the currency in denominations of 100, 50 and 20, a release by the Mizoram information and public relation department said here today. The seized US currency in rupees is worth more than 30 lakh, and the seizure was one of the biggest in recent times. On frisking the accused, identified as Khuplianthanga from Mizoram-Myanmar border Champhai town, a mobile phone with contact numbers from Myanmar was also recovered, and the arrested suspect was allegedly carrying the dollars to make payment for an arms consignment from Myanmar, the release said. The contraband, reportedly smuggled from Myanmar was allegedly meant for the use of a Chakma insurgent outfit- Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samity (PCJSS), a faction of the Shanti Bahini led by Santularma, operating in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, it said. Naga tradition fading: Nagaland BJP

Kohima:  Nagaland BJP President Dr M Chuba Ao has expressed serious concern over the Naga tradition, which is now fading away with the coming of modernization and noted that the youth of today’s generation are now living in between western and traditional culture because of which no perfect changes could be taken up. Addressing as the Chief Guest on the occasion of the 22nd Annual Fresher’s Meet of the Eastern Christian College (ECC) at Dimapur on Friday,  Dr Ao advised the students not to be dependent on Government jobs alone, but instead contribute to the state by becoming self-employed in any possible way. Digital things should be utilised in a positive manner for the cause of bringing development through various social networking sites, he stated. He also encouraged the students to be innovative by thinking in a different way instead of waiting for a white collar job after graduating. (UNI)

Govt to constitute Skill Devp Corporation soon: Gogoi

Guwahati: Assam Government would constitute a Skill Development Corporation soon for development of the populace in the rural areas, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said. A press release issued by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) today quoted Gogoi as saying, “more than 80 per cent of the populace live in the rural areas. The state cannot forge ahead if the rural areas do not march ahead on the path of progress and development. That is why our thrust all along has been on rural development”. “We want to raise the productivity of the farmers and the income of the people living in the rural areas. The state will make progress only if the rural economy prospers,” he said. Gogoi also urged Block Development Officers (BDOs) to work with dedication and sincerity for the development of the rural areas and alleviate the peoples economic lot there. (PTI)
