SHILLONG: A group of miscreants, who barged into the NEHU campus on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, clashed with students resulting in injuries to them.
The injured students are currently undergoing treatment at NEIGRIHMS.
Security has been beefed up at NEHU following the incident and the district administration has provided additional forces to man the sprawling campus.
According to reports, around 200 persons from outside entered the campus on Saturday night and assaulted the undergraduate students of Technology and Law at the NEHU hostel which has a mixed group of students, mostly from Assam.
Another group of persons numbering around 30 again barged into the university campus on Sunday and clashed with the students leaving several injured.
Acting NEHU Vice Chancellor P. Shukla on Sunday said he was concerned over the violent incidents at NEHU campus. As the exact reason is not known, NEHU will order an internal inquiry to ascertain the cause which led to the incidents.
“After the first incident on Saturday night the affected students approached me at around 3 am seeking security and after the matter was sorted out, another attack took place on Sunday which is shocking,” Shukla said.
Though NEHU has private security guards manning the area, there have been instances of breach of security in the past.
“We will provide adequate security forces and the matter has been taken up with the district administration,” Shukla said.
However, Shukla does not advocate deployment of too many security personnel in NEHU which according to him will militarize the campus.
Meanwhile, NEHUSU has condemned the ‘cowardly attack’ on the students of the University by some unknown miscreants who came from outside the campus and attacked them inside the hostel.
In a statement issued here Sunday, NEHUSU vice-president, Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew, demanded the police authority to arrest the culprits immediately and initiate action against them as per law.
NEHUSU also convened an emergency meeting on Sunday with students of different communities studying in NEHU to discuss the incidents.
The Union appealed to all the students to maintain peace and not to spread rumours and hatred among the students. The Union also urged NEHU authority to provide adequate security at the campus.
