New Delhi: The demand for inclusion of Khasi language is under consideration of the Government, the Union Home Ministry informed Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya, Wansuk Syiem, on Tuesday.

In a letter addressed to Wansuk, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, said that Khasi language is one of the 38 languages which the Centre is considering for inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India. Demand for inclusion of such languages had come from different states, it added.

Wansuk had moved a special mention in the Upper House demanding inclusion of both Khasi and Garo languages in the coveted Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

Inclusion of the two languages will help in removing the feeling of alienation of lakhs of tribals living in remotest part of the country, she had said.
