NONGPOH: Ri Bhoi Police arrested two leaders of the KSU Umsning Unit in the wee hours of Tuesday for locking the Meghalaya Agrovet Company on the allegation that the company was releasing waste products into a river which was the source of drinking water for several villages in Umsning area.

The two arrested leaders were identified as Augustine Nongbri, vice president of KSU Umsning unit and Reymond Jana, general secretary.

The duo was arrested from their respective residences at Umsning and Kyrdemkulai village in a night operation, Ri Bhoi Police sources said.

Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police, C.V.S. Reddy, informed that the two KSU leaders were forwarded to the Court which remanded them in police custody for two days.

He also informed that police were on the lookout for around 30-40 members of the KSU unit for their involvement in putting the company under lock and key.

Reddy added that Police would not hesitate in arresting them since they had taken the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile, the KSU North Khasi Hills district unit, on Tuesday denounced Ri Bhoi Police for arresting their leaders. They argued that the Company had been put under lock and key since it violated the decision of the public who had strongly opposed release of waste products into the river which was their main source of drinking water.

The KSU unit also claimed that their leaders and members had not broken any law, and added that the police were being adamant.
