Film festival begins in Agartala

Agartala: A three-day film festival, where 30 award-winning films from seven countries will be screened, began here on Friday. The state minister for information and cultural affairs,Bhanulal Saha, who inaugurated the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), said it was jointly organized by the Films Division of Government of India and the United Films Professionals Association (UFPA). UFPA secretary Sanjib Das said, the films include short,animation and documentary films from India, Bangladesh, Australia, Romania, United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan which were made within the last decade. He said the first International Film Festival for Documentary, Short and Animation Films was held in the year 1990 in Mumbai. The biennial festival is conducted with the active collaboration of Government and the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association. “The city of Mumbai is the permanent venue of the festival, but it is also organised outside Mumbai occasionally,” Das said. The films which would be screened at the festival include “9X9”, “Gulabi Gang”, “True Love Story”, “Ali and the Ball”,”Music in the Blood”, “17 Not RequiredIndians”, “Are You Listening”. (PTI)

Darrang SP transferred, OC suspended in lawyer’s killing

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Friday ordered the transfer of Darrang Superintendent of Police G V Siva Prasad and suspended Officer in Charge of Mangaldai Police Station Sashi Kanta Das in connection with the killing of a leading lawyer by dacoits on August 29. The orders to this effect have been issued owing to the gross negligence and indifferent attitude of the concerned police officials in connection with the killing of leading advocate and businessman Binoy Kumar Ghosh by a dacoit gang that burgled his residence in Mangaldoi town. Gogoi in a statement directed police officials to act promptly in cases relating to theft, burglary, and other crimes. He also instructed them to register cases immediately on receiving complaints and to investigate them without any delay. Gogoi warned that deterrent action would be taken against any police official for dereliction of duties. The Chief Minister had ordered an inquiry into the incident headed by Additional Chief Secretary. (PTI)

NF Railway to run special train

Guwahati: North East Frontier Railway would run nine pairs of special weekly trains to clear extra rush of passengers between New Jalpaiguri and Ranchi. The weekly special train bearing number 08630 will leave New Jalpaiguri on Fridays at 05-15 hrs of September 19 and 26, October 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31st, November 7 and 14th to arrive at Ranchi at 03-30 hrs on Saturday. During the return journey, the weekly special train bearing number 08629 will leave Ranchi on Thursdays at 05-45 hrs on September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30th, November 6and 13th to arrive at New Jalpaiguri at 04-00 hrs on Fridays. The train will have AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper class and general second class accommodations. The special train will stop at Siliguri Jn, Thakurganj, Aluabari Road, Kishanganj, Barsoi, Katihar, Naugachia, Khagaria, Begusarai, Barauni, Kiul, Jhajha, Jasidih, Madhupur, Chittaranjan, Pradhankhunta, Dhanbad, Chandrapura, Rajabera, Bokaro Steel City and Muri stations. 5-yr boy drowns to death, Kamrup district orders probe

Guwahati:  A five-year old boy died after falling into a drain during heavy rains here Friday morning. The Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and announced Rs 1.5 lakh as immediate relief to the next of kin, an official release said. A resident of Barshapara area of Guwahati, the child Joydeep Chakraborty probably slipped into the drain in front of his house during heavy rains. Later his body was fished out by the police, the district information officer said. The authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident by Dispur Revenue Circle Officer (Attached) Prashanta Kathkotiya, who will submit his report within three days. Angamuthu visited the site and said the owner of the house encroached the drain and house was constructed on the drain. In the morning, heavy rains lashed the city, leading to water logging in different parts of the city, the district administration official said. The city roads were clogged and it led to massive traffic jams across the city that continued till afternoon. (PTI)
