ICAR awareness programme

SHILLONG: The Fisheries Division of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Barapani, Meghalaya, organized a day-long awareness and ranching programme of Pengba (Osteobrama belangeri) an indigenous and endangered fish species of Northeast India at Umiam Lake, Barapani.

The fish is endemic to Manipur and is being newly introduced in Meghalaya by the Fisheries division of ICAR under an project undertaken by Dr. S.K. Das, Principal Scientist & Head. Pengba fingerlings of 8-10 cm size produced by the Institute were released into the Umiam Lake in thousands. ICAR also distributed Pengba seeds and genetically improved Amur common carp to a group of farmers of Pyllun Nongthymmai and Mynsiem villages.
