UP government a failure on all fronts: BSP

Fatehpur: The Bahujan Samaj Party accused the Uttar Pradesh government of being a failure on all fronts. “The present government has proved to be a failure on all fronts. People are facing all kinds of problems and harassment. Criminals are moving about freely posing a serious challenge to the law and order situation,” state unit President Ram Achal Rajbhar said while addressing party workers here Friday. The leader asked his partymen to work earnestly and stated that the days ahead belong to Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Rajbhar, while talking to the media Friday, said that Akhilesh Yadav-led government has failed to live upto the expectations of the people who voted them to power. He added that the people of the state would teach the government a lesson. (PTI)

Mother takes son to police for raping minor

Canning (WB): A youth was arrested on a complaint of his mother for allegedly raping a minor girl near a school at Diamond Harbour in South 24-Parganas district, police said Saturday. “Najir Seikh, a bus conductor, was arrested after his mother Ainur Bibi lodged a complaint with the Diamond Harbour police station after rescuing the seven-year-old girl yesterday,” Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rupantar Sengupta said. Ainur Bibi came to know about the incident after Nazir talked about it after returning home in a drunken state, Sengupta said. Najir and three others had allegedly raped a class-1 student when she had gone outside the school to urinate as the school toilet was closed. She was left unconscious near a bush. “After hearing about the incident Ainur Bibi rushed to rescue the girl. She took the girl to Diamond Harbour hospital and then lodged a complaint against her son with the police,” the SDPO said. The family members of the girl were unaware of the incident when Ainur Bibi took the girl to the hospital and later reached the police station, Sengupta said. (PTI)

Child trafficking gang busted, five infants rescued

Dehradun: Five infants aged between 4-8 months were rescued when police busted a child-trafficking gang and arrested four of its members. The infants were kidnapped from different locations in Haridwar including Har ki Pauri and the railway station on different dates, Haridwar SSP Sadanand Date said Saturday. Four members of the gang including a woman were arrested Friday on a tip-off from Jwalapur Railway Station by GRP and SOG teams, he said. Preliminary investigation has revealed that they were preparing to sell these infants to childless couples for Rs 2 to 5 lakh, he said. The children belong to economically weaker sections from Uttar Pradesh, he said. (PTI)

Gehlot hails SC order regarding undertrial prisoners

Jaipur: Former chief minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot on Saturday welcomed the Supreme Court order to release the undertrial prisoners who have served half of the maximum sentence prescribed for the offences they are charged with. Gehlot in a statement here said that there should be an arrangement in the judiciary that no undertrial has to be in jail unnecessarily. He said that several prisoners have to remain in jail for period more than the maximum and some suspected criminals also have to be put behind bars due to delay in court judgements. The former CM said the order of the the apex court will reduce the number of undertrial inmates in jails. Friday, the Supreme Court has    ordered release of all undertrial prisoners who have spent half of the maximum sentence prescribed for the offences they are charged with, bringing much needed relief to poor people who are languishing in jails as they are not able to pay sureties and bail bond to get out of jail. Expressing concern that more than 60 per cent prisoners are undertrials, the apex court assigned the task to lower judicial officers to visit each jail under their jurisdiction from October 1 to find out and release such prisoners immediately. It also set a period of two months time to finish the work. (PTI)
