SHILLONG: The Bank of India (BOI) celebrated its 109th Annual Foundation Day in the city on Saturday.
As part of the function the bank honoured six customers drawn from across its four branches in the State.
BOI was founded in 1906 as the first bank during the British Raj that catered to the people of India rather than the colonial administration. It was started by a group of Hindus, Muslims, Parsis and Jews and was later nationalised in 1969. It now has more than 4,500 branches across the country including 76 in the North East. It opened its first of three branches in Shillong more than 20 years ago.
As part of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, which fits in with its commitment to the public, BOI has already opened more than 600 accounts under the Central scheme.
