ATM loot: Culprits identified

SHILLONG: Ri-Bhoi police have identified seven miscreants who had looted more than Rs 26 lakh from an ATM located in the heart of Nongpoh town by breaking it open in the early morning of Tuesday.

Informing this on Wednesday, Ri Bhoi police chief CVS Reddy said that all the seven were from Assam and they had committed similar crimes in Assam.

A team of Ri Bhoi police has already gone to Assam to arrest the culprits, Reddy said.

The incident has raised serious concern about the security of the ATMs since all the SBI ATMs in the state do not have security guards.

The Ri Bhoi police are also investigating if anyone from inside the bank was involved in the incident.

The SP also said that the vault of the machine should have been fitted at least 4-6 feet inside but it was fitted only 2 feet inside.
