Political parties start campaigning for Hiyanglam bypoll

Imphal: Political parties have started political campaign for bypoll of 38-Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency scheduled on October 15 next. The seat had been lying vacant after Trinamool MLA, M Kunjo expired on Aug 11 last. The Congress is likely to put up former MLA Elangbam Dwijamani. Manipur People’s Party (MPP) has announced that M Amutombi will be contesting in the bypoll. Trinamool Congress which was holding the seat is yet to declare its candidate. Three persons including son of the M Kunjo are also vying for BJP ticket. In the last Assembly election M Kunjo had defeated Elangbam Dwijamani of Congress by a margin of 17 votes. Votes will be counted on October 19. Bypoll will be held in 34 polling stations and 23,720 voters will exercise their franchise. (UNI)

Aizawl venue for MIFF workshop

Aizawl: Director General of Film Division V.S. Kundu on Monday said Aizawl will be one of the two permanent venues for holding workshop on Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) in the North East from this year. Speaking at the inaugural function of the MIFF in Mizoram here, Kundu said that Workshop on film making, editing and sound designing would be held in Aizawl every year by the Film Division. Earlier chief minister Lal Thanhawla on Monday inaugurated the six-day MIFF in Mizoram where 21 films, including six Mizo and four foreign films would be screened. (PTI)

BJYM rally over law and order situation in Arunachal

Itanagar: Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Arunachal Pradesh, particularly capital Itanagar, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) today organised a protest rally and submitted a seven-point memorandum to Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma. The rally which started from Akashdeep Complex and culminated at Zero Point Tinali, was participated by over 500 party workers. However, police prohibited the members to reach the Raj Bhawan and instead allowed a nine-member team to submit the memorandum. The memorandum, a copy of which was made available to the media, seeking the governor’s intervention on the “serious law and order problem”, demanded immediate resignation of Home Minister Tanga Byaling for his alleged failure to contain growing crimes in the state capital as well as in other parts of the state. The other demands of the BJYM includes, urgent measures to contain law and order problems, to put a halt on fraudulent diversion of development funds, early restoration of NH 52-A,proper road connectivity at state capital with urgent initiative for subways and to put a ban on mass political transfer and postings. Woman cheated by lover, gangraped

Rangiya (Assam): A 25-year-old woman was gangraped allegedly by a youth she trusted as her lover and seven of his friends at Hajo in Rangiya Saturday night. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kanteswar Gogoi said the girl from Nalbari came to meet the boy, who had befriended her in past five months over phone, at Ramdiya Bangalpara under Hajo police station and watched a theatre. The boy, who introduced himself as Rahul Das, was actually Fakhruddin Ali, who had offered to drop the girl home but instead took her to a school building, Gogoi said. He and seven of his friends, who had already assembled there, then allegedly took turns in raping the hapless woman, the SDPO said. On hearing her screams, people from nearby villages rushed to the spot and rescued the girl and got hold of three of the accused and handed them over to the police. The rest five, including Fakhruddin, however, managed to escape. The trio have been identified as Alam Ali, Jaimuddin Ahmed and Hashen Ali. Preliminary medical examination of the girl confirmed the crime. (PTI)
