NONGSTOIN: Following a brief lull, the pro-ILP pressure groups of the State on Monday renewed their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit system in Meghalaya.
The consortium of pressure groups organised a public meeting at Nongstoin Market on Monday where they reiterated their demand for the ILP.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the frontal organisations including HNYF, FKJGP, KSU central body, KSU West Khasi Hills unit and FKJGP West Khasi Hills circle.
The pressure groups took note of the State Government’s failure to put in place an alternative mechanism to curb influx and entry of illegal immigrants into the State and renewed their demand for immediate implementation of the proposed comprehensive mechanism to combat influx.
Condemning the State Government for failing to tackle unabated influx into the State, the pressure groups demanded immediate implementation of the comprehensive mechanism to combat influx.
FKJGP president Joe Marwein said that Federation solicited support of the local people for implementation of ILP in the State, saying that only a strong public voice can lead to fulfillment of the ILP demand.
Marwein also asserted that the pressure groups would not give up their demand for implementation of ILP, and added that the comprehensive mechanism was needed for the time being to control influx.
“The government said ILP cannot be implemented without the approval of the Centre; so an alternative mechanism is needed to tackle influx,” Marwein said.
KSU president Daniel Khyriem also asserted that the pressure groups had not given up their demand for ILP, and stated said the comprehensive mechanism has features similar to the original ILP.
He, however, made it clear that the pressure groups would never term the mechanism as ‘modified ILP’ since ILP cannot be modified.
Khyriem, further, reiterated that the 13 pressure groups had proposed the comprehensive mechanism as an alternative mechanism to check entry of immigrants into the State.
Leaders of all the pressure groups sought the support of the local people for fulfillment of their demand for implementation of ILP in the State.
