SHILLONG: Amid increasing reports of people being duped by callers identifying themselves as bank officials, the East Khasi Hills Police has urged ATM users not to divulge any details to anyone over the phone.

While urging the public to strictly adhere to the safety measures circulated and displayed by the banks regularly while using their ATM cards, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang advised bank account holders to register their mobile number to get SMS alerts of any transaction made with their accounts.

“If any illegal transaction is done through their (people’s) ATM card, they should bring the same to the notice of the concerned bank and police immediately,” Kharkrang said.

The East Khasi Hills SP lamented that despite advisories, people are falling prey to fraudsters who seek personal details over the phone.

He informed that such disguised callers belonged to organized gangs who are trying to lure customers by pretending to be SBI employees.
