Education scam
SHILLONG: While the CID sleuths of the special cell headed by Special Superintendent of Police (CID), Claudia A. Lyngwa, made a remarkable arrest of an Education Department official for taking bribe to effect a transfer of a school teacher on Wednesday, the same enthusiasm is not shown by the police to catch the higher ups involved in the education scam which took place during the tenure of Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who was holding the education portfolio then.
Despite several FIRs filed with police a few years back, there was no pro-active step on the part of police to take action against those involved.
Adding to the dilly-dally, the Investigation Officer in the case is yet to get the original documents from CBI, which had unearthed the scam.
Hundreds of eligible job aspirants were affected after the higher ups in the education department allegedly manipulated the mark sheets to appoint undeserving candidates who were recommended by politicians.
SC case: Meanwhile, the pending case in the Supreme Court on the education scam will come up for hearing on November 26. The case was heard on September 9 in the Registrar Court under Supreme Court of India, and the respondents including Meghalaya Government were given four week’s time to file counter affidavits.
Earlier in April this year, the Supreme had made the formation of High Level Scrutiny Committee (HLSC) illegal. It was HLSC which probed the education scam and recommended action against 242 teachers who were appointed illegally.
After the ‘tainted’ teachers filed the case in the Supreme Court against the termination of their services, the Court made the formation of HLSC illegal which indirectly gave relief to the ‘tainted’ teachers in East Khasi Hills who were petitioners.
