Mawiong ISBT: NEC ‘upset’ over delay in project

SHILLONG: The North East Council (NEC) is unhappy with the State Government over its inability to start the construction work for the Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawiong.
Reliable sources said that the NEC had released the first installment of Rs 4 crore for the project over a year ago. Sources also informed that the NEC had held a meeting with the State Government on the issue a few months back in which the latter had assured that the construction work for the ISBT would be started at the earliest.
“It’s more than a year since the first installment was released and we don’t know what is leading to the delay in the construction,” sources said.
The construction of the proposed ISBT at Mawiong, which is being funded by the NEC, was approved by the Planning Commission in 2012. Once operational, the terminal would accommodate up to as 200 buses.
The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 48.31 crore.
The State Government also has plans to construct an Inter State Truck Terminus (ISTT) at Sumer at a total cost of Rs. 26 crore.
