SHILLONG: There seems to be no love lost between the UDP and KHADC CEM Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit. A fresh controversy was raked up by UDP MDC from Umsning, Donkupar Sumer, who expressed surprise over the appointments made by Basaiawmoit despite the prevailing financial crisis in the Council.

Talking to newsmen here on Tuesday, Sumer said that the CEM, who holds the charge of Personnel department, had made these fresh appointments after terminating seven of the casual peons on July 31 last on the ground that the Council suffered a severe financial crunch.

Sumer, who is a member in the present Executive Committee, said that the seven casual employees whose services were terminated were getting a fixed salary of Rs 5000 per month.

He, however, observed that the 12 fresh appointments made by the CEM on September 11 would drain the Council of Rs 2 lakh which will be paid as salaries.

“The EC was in the dark about these appointments made by the CEM,” Sumer added.

Earlier, during the public meeting, Basaiawmoit had clarified that he had made some fresh appointments to help some of the families who had lost their lone bread earner who passed away while in service.
