SHILLONG: The 32nd Meghalaya State Table Tennis Championships began with grand opening ceremony on Monday. The tournament was inaugurated by Chief General Manager Telecom BSNL NE-I Circle, DP Singh.
The first day of the event witnessed upsets in the Men’s singles quarterfinals. Top seed Debanjan Sarkar lost 1-3 to Sagar Pandey, a class XII student of St. Anthony’s H S School. Another senior Men’s singles player Rituraj Shabong went down 0-3 to Prithvi Dey of St Anthony’s.
Kyrshanborlang Ranee, the senior-most player in the tournament, also got a scare from Suranjit Dey a class IX student of St Anthony’s but ultimately sailed through 3-2 in a nail biting decider.
Meanwhile, girls’ top seed, Tanushree Das Gupta made it to the semifinal stage.
