HNLC calls 24-hour bandh on October 1

SHILLONG: The proscribed HNLC has called a 24-hour bandh to condemn the killing at Wapung village in East Jaintia Hills and the brutal murder of a 23-year-old student from the State at Dharwad, Karnataka. The outfit also called for the boycott of the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2.
The 24-hour bandh will be effective from 6 pm of October 1 to 6 pm of October 2 in the entire Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
“We have decided to call the bandh in opposition to the celebration of the international day of non-violence which we consider as the darkest day for the Hynniewtrep people,” HNLC publicity secretary, Sainkupar Nongtraw, said in a statement issued on Friday.
Nongtraw claimed that Mahatma Gandhi was the “main conspirator who forced the Hynniewtrep kings and his Durbar Hima to be part of Hindustan”.
Nongtraw also demanded the State Government to ensure that justice is delivered to the families of the two people killed in police firing in Jaintia Hills.
