Indian sailing contention for a medal
Incheon: Indian sailors Varsha Gautham and Aishwarya Nedunchezhiyan placed themselves in medal contention as they occupied fourth with two races to go in the 29er Women’s Two Person Dinghy event at the Asian Games here on Saturday.Varsha and Aishwarya finished third and fourth in the ninth and 10th races today to be at fourth with 11th and 12th races to go. In fact, the Indian duo was at second spot after the ninth race today but fell back to fourth after the 10th race.Meanwhile, 12-year-old Indian sailor Chitresh Tatha occupied fifth with two races to go in the men’s Optimist One Person Dinghy event. Chitresh finished fourth in the second race — 10th of the event — to pull himself up to the fifth spot. Only two races remain in the competition.His woman counterpart Ramya Saravanan was at sixth after the 10 races in an eight-competitor field in the women’s Optimist One Person Dinghy event.In women’s Laser Radial One Person Dinghy event, Nethra Kumanan was at seventh in the eight competitor field.(pti)
Indians athletes impress in Kayak and Canoe events
Incheon: On a fruitful day for Indian athletes in the Asian Games, the Kayaking and Canoeing team also made its presence felt after a host of national kayakers, including Albert Raj Selvaraj, made it to the semi-finals of the singles and team events, here on saturday.Selvaraj was good in the 1000m men’s Heat as he covered the distance in 15.306 minutes to make the final-four of the Kayak single.Gaurav In the Canoe men’s double, India’s Ajit Kumar Sha and Raju Rawat clocked 11.606 in the 1000m Heat to book their final-four spot.In the Kayak Double, Sunny Kumar and Chingching Singh Arambam covered the 1000m in 3.606 minutes to move into the semi-finals. The Sunny-Arambam duo also moved into the Kayak double in 200m.In Kayak Four, Singh Ajit Sunny, Ramesh Golli and Arambamtimed 14.031 minutes in the 100m Heat to make the semi-final cut. Japanese swimmer expelled from Asiad for stealing camera
Incheon:Swimmer Naoya Tomita has been expelled from the Japanese team competing in the 17th Asian Games after he admitted to stealing a camera from a South Korean journalist, officials said here Saturday.”The swimmer (Tomita) stole a camera from a South Korean journalist. CCTV revealed the swimmer had put the camera in his bag,” Tsuyoshi Aoki, head of the Japanese swimming team, told a press conference, reports Xinhua.”He has confessed to stealing the camera but interrogation is still on. He has not been booked officially.”He will have to find his own way back to Japan. Further consequences of the act will be decided upon in Japan,” added Aoki.Tomita, 25, won the gold medal in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke at the 2010 Asian Game but failed to win a medal in Incheon.(ians)
