Three suspected miscreants arrested
Dharmanagar (Tripura): Three suspected miscreants were arrested following an encounter Sunday at Chanpur area of North Tripura district, about 20 km from here, police said. Acting on a tip-off that a group of miscreants could commit dacoity in the Chanpur area, a contingent of police led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Dharmanagar, Rajdwip De went to the area Saturday night. When police spotted that a group of about five miscreants with lethal weapons moving in the area, they challenged the miscreants and who fired upon police and police also retaliated by opening five rounds. The miscreants managed to escape. Later searching the area recovered one country made pistol and one country made rifle, knives, a few masks and arrested three suspected miscreants from the area. NF Railway cancels 10 trains as flood damages tracks
Guwahati: Northeast Frontier Railway Sunday cancelled 10 trains, and changed the schedules and routes of three others due to damage in tracks by flood waters in Lower Assam. In a statement, NF Railway spokesperson said the trains have been cancelled “in view of the breaches in the New Bongaigaon-Goalpara Town-Kamakhya section of Rangiya division”. Apart from the cancelled trains, NF Railway has diverted two trains and rescheduled one train, the spokesperson added. (PTI)
Boy sustains splinter injury
Kohima: A minor boy sustained splinter injury when an object given to him by his friend turned out to be a bomb and exploded, police said Sunday. The boy, a scrap collector, was trying to break open the object when it explodedSaturday, the police said. The incident took place at High School Junction area. His friend, also a scrap collector, had found the object from a construction site. The boy sustained splinters injuries on the belly and upper part of the body, the police said. He underwent a surgery at a local hospital and was now out of danger. Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad team rushed to the spot and found 12 similar objects at the construction site. (PTI)
Northern Angami-II bypoll to be straight fight between NPF-BJP
Kohima: The by-election to the Northern Angami-II Assembly in Nagaland on October 15 will witness a straight fight between the coalition partners of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN). It will be a contest between Naga People’s Front (NPF), the major constituent of DAN and BJP. While NPF has set up Dr Neiphrezo Keditsu, son-in-law of former Chief Minister and sitting Lok Sabha member from the state Neiphiu Rio, BJP has fielded retired bureaucrat Visasolie Lhoungu. Opposition Congress in the state has not put up any candidate. The Northern-II Assembly Constituency seat fell vacant on May 24 after three times Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio resigned on being elected to the Lok Sabha. (PTI)
Policeman killed , 16 injured in Imphal blast
Imphal: A police constable was killed and 16 others sustained injuries when a powerful bomb exploded a Durga Puja venue in Imphal last Wednesday night. Police said a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) exploded at MG Avenue, about 200 m from City Police station, resulting in injuries to 16 people. Police said the constable identified as M Ibotomba (34), severely injured in the blast, was rushed to hospital, where he died. Police on Thursday surveyed the area and it was found that the bomb was placed in a drain. Forensic experts also searched the area and nobody was allowed to enter the area ojn Thursday. Most of the shops in the vicinity remained closed. Kh Joykishan, MLA, senior police officials visited the two hospitals to meet the victims. (UNI)
