Petition on river pollution

SHILLONG: The NGT, while hearing a petition filed by a city resident Naba Bhattarcharjee on the pollution of the Wahumkhrah, Umshyrpi and Umiam lake, has directed the State Government-run agencies to file their replies within a period of three weeks.

The tribunal issued the directive to the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MPSCB) and Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to submit their replies.

“The petition will be taken up for consideration in the next date of hearing,” Supreme Court lawyer Ranjan Mukheree said on Tuesdsay.

Meanwhile, Bhattacherjee said that he had requested the tribunal to make the MeECL as the party since the petition is also refers to the pollution of the Umiam lake.

According to him, the tribunal has asked the MSPCB to submit the action plan within a period two months.
