Nagaland Governor appeals to give safe passage to Amur Falcon

Kohima:Nagaland Governor P. B. Acharya has sincerely appealed to the people of Nagaland, Village Councils, and various Departments to protect the amazing birds, the Amur Falcon and ensure a safe passage to these amazing raptors through Nagaland.In a message to the people of the state Mr. Acharya said Mr. Acharya said that in the month of October, huge numbers of Amur falcons arrive in North East Indian State of Nagaland from Siberia en route to their final destination to Somalia, Kenya and South Africa. These amazing raptors have one of the longest migration routes of all birds, doing up to 22,000 km in a year. The birds are unusual in that they migrate a large distance over the sea and also continue their journey at night.Mr. Acharya said India, as a signatory to the Convention of Migratory Species (CMS), is duty bound to prevent this massacre but provide safe passage. The people of Nagaland are very grateful to NGOs, Government Departments and Nagaland Wildlife & Biodiversity Conservation Trust (NWBCT) for their initiatives to protect these wonderful raptors during their short stay in Nagaland and to ensure safe passage. “Let us be sincere in our efforts and actions to preserve the environment and nature’s beauty,” he said. Temjen Toy takes over as Nagaland Finance commissioner

Kohima:Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary Temjen Toy took over as the Finance Commissioner after Toshi Aier took charge as the new Chief Secretary. Official sources today said that the Finance Department yesterday organized a programme to welcome Mr. Toy. Speaking at the meeting Toy sought support and cooperation of all the officers and staff so to enable him to carry out the task of spearheading the department. Nagaland Secretary Finance Y. Kikheto Sema welcomed the finance commissioner and assured him support and cooperation of all officers and staff. (UNI)

Block point on NH 52(A) opens for vehicular movement

Itanagar:Arunachal Pradesh PWD Minister Gojen Gadi along with PWD Parliamentary Secretary Alo Libang opened the Karsingsa block point here yesterday, to facilitate traffic movement along the NH 52(A) between Nirjuli-Baderdewa, after a gap of about two months. A major portion of the NH at Karsingsa sinking zone was washed away by the ferocious Dikrong River which had forced diversion of the vehicular traffic movement through the Bage Tinali-Doimukh-Gumto-Banderdewa road from August 15 last. ‘The PWD engineers, contractors and labours worked round the clock braving the torrential rain to accomplish the Herculean task much ahead of the October 31 deadline for which they deserve appreciation’, the duo said before flagging off the vehicles. The work to improve the Capital Complex road would continue, Gadi said while addressing the media persons in presence of the PWD commissioner Ganesh Koyu, engineers’ team led PWD (Highway) EE Gyati Khoda and others. The team also inspected the diverted wide road later when Gadi-Libang lauded the painstaking efforts in developing the road at a much shorter time. (UNI)

NSCN-IM asks cadres not to be involved in by-polls

Kohima: The NSCN (I-M) has cautioned all cadres against getting involved in the October 15 by-poll to Northern Angami assembly seat under Kohima district.In a notification, ‘Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP)’ of the NSCN-IM said ‘any national worker (Angami region in particular) found participating in the electioneering process shall face dire consequences’.Meanwhile, the United Sangtam Students Conference (USSC), after holding a Consultative Meeting with the Naga Political Groups (undergrounds) in United Sangtam Region (USR), Kiphire on Tuesday, issued a ‘5-point notification’ to all the NPGs within Sangtam jurisdiction.USSC executive secretary Justin Khatomong expressed gratitude to the NPG leaders for responding positively to the USSC circular. He said the meeting was called for ‘peace and harmony’ and for better understanding in the district. In its ‘5-point notification’, USSC reaffirmed to unconditionally support ENPO declaration of ‘Peace Zone’ within its jurisdiction and asked all NPG to strictly adhere to the ENPO resolution within USSC jurisdiction, which includes Kiphire district and Longkhim Chare under Tuensang district. ATM lifter arrested

Rangiya (Assam): An ATM lifter was arrested on Thursday when Three gang was planning to steal another here. According to police, a gang of three were trying to lift an ATM during the early hours on Thurday morning but it is on exact time when police got the information and reached the spot.One of the miscreants was arrested but two of his accomplices escaped.The police also seized a car used by the gang. The gang has been involved in lifting a number of ATMs in lower Assam. (PTI)

Housewife molested, assaulted in Tripura; police ‘fails to act’

Agartala:Tension gripped Tata area of Chandrapur in eastern part of Agartala against inaction of police in brutally torturing a middle aged housewife by a group of women in public two days ago and allegedly paved way for the accused to get bail in the court. Besides, localities, the opposition political parties – BJP, Congress and Trinamool Congress have accused police of bias to the ruling CPI-M cadres allegedly involved in the crime. The parties alleged despite molesting a women in public by an organized gang followed by physical assault police registered case in weak sections of IPC. The victim family had lodged specific complaint against 19 persons including a few leaders of CPI-M woman wings for battering the lady tying her with a pole allegedly when she has protested the move of the accused persons against her modesty. Victim’s husband Nirmal Debnath said, his wife Soma Debnath had accused some youths of the locality for forcing Nirmal to have liquor on Sunday during immersion of Goddess Durga. She raised objection to the alleged acts of the youths and sought justice from local Panchayat. Accordingly, on Monday the Panchayat called for reconciliation meeting in a temple. “When she reached the spot, women activists of CPI-M accused her of indulging prostitution in her house. (UNI)
