Annual conference of NE Diabetes Society held

SHILLONG: The 19th Annual Conference of North Eastern Diabetes Society was inaugurated by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma at Rhino Hall, Shillong, in the presence of Health Minister A.L. Hek and others, on Friday.

Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest, Sangma explained that the present lifestyle and food habits of the people were responsible for the rise in the number of people suffering from various diseases all over the globe.

He further said that packed and ready to eat products have taken a heavy toll on the health scenario, adding that there is definitely an enormous change in the food habit which has lead to various diseases such as diabetes.

People from all sections need to put their heads together and identify diagnosis for such diseases and make a study of how to eradicate them, he informed, adding, “We have good medical institutions and NEIGHRIIMS, where experts can provide better facilities”.

He also wondered why the previous generations were not exposed to such diseases.

He also urged the youths of the State, who are now exposed to such diseases, to be aware of how to change their lifestyle and food habits.

He also said that the State Government was taking all measures to fill infrastructural gap in the rural areas, as people from the area migrate to urban areas due to lack of medical facilities.
