SHILLONG: The 17th Late Bro. Thomas More Memorial Art and Music competition was held at Tura recently. Students from over 16 schools in and around Tura attended the event which has become an annual gathering of talented youths from Garo Hills.
The event is organized to commemorate the death anniversary of Rev. Bro. Thomas More, founder of the Montfort Centre for Education.
Bro. More died 19 years ago when he met with a tragic jeep accident on his way to Rabhagre for the inauguration of a school there. He died at Kamari village near Tikrikkilla (110kms from Tura). The youths look forward to this annual event.
The competition began with a prayer service at the tomb of late Bro. More.
“This is not just a competition, this is a get-together of ideas, music and young talents in Garo Hills,” said Bro. K. J. Jose SG, Director of Montfort School, Tura. He was addressing a large number of children assembled around the tomb.
On the occasion, the students of Sherwood School, Tura performed an improvisation of the famous World Cup theme song ‘Waving Flag’ and dedicated it as a message of peace to Garo Hills.
Another school that caught the attention of the gathering was St.Peters’s Seminary Tura. Seminary students with their smart caps and uniforms captivated the audience.
Children of Montfort Special School (blind, deaf and the mentally challenged children) also captured the imagination of the audience.
Two granddaughters of the legendary singer of Garo Hills Pa Raphael (once known as the Michael Jackson of Garo Hills) mesmerized the audience.
