Bat harvesting festival of Bomrr clan in Kiphire district

Kohima: The members of Bomrr clan, living in and around Mimi village under Kiphire district, are all geared up to celebrate their unique annual festival of harvesting bats starting on Monday. During the three-day festival, the Bomrr members visit the caves and harvest bats in thousands by smoking them out, a release issued by members of Bomrr clan Y Makezho and N Musole said. The festival is auspicious to the Bomrr clan as they believe that their spirits would not be accepted by their ancestors if they do not perform this practice. Every year during October second and third weeks, the bats are harvested from a large cave popularly known as ‘Bomrr Lapkhun Cave’. This age old practice was kept under wraps since the clan has the exclusive rights to these caves and to the practice. However, this year the clansmen decided to permit visitors, interested in experiencing the harvest, to visit Mimi and the cave. The cave can be reached after about an hour’s walk from Mimi village. The beauty of the natural cave has a great attraction for any visitor. Wild animals take shelter there. There are four caves measuring 300 to 400 feet and some measure 200 to 300 feet. Locals of the region collect thousands of bats by lighting up a fire inside the caves.(UNI)
