SHILLONG: The World Food Day was observed on Thursday by the Directorate of Agriculture at the Integrated Agriculture Training Centre, Upper Shillong.
Government Chief Whip and local legislator, R.V. Lyngdoh, graced the occasion as the chief guest in the presence of others.
Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh informed that the State Government is embarking on “Mission Organic” which aims to usher in a new cultivation system which is safer to human health and at the same time help in preservation of the environment.
Lyngdoh also exhorted the farmers to join hands in partnership with the Department of Agriculture in taking forward the new initiative of propelling Meghalaya as an ‘organic State’ while at the same time urging the gathering to preserve the bio-diversity of the State by growing traditional crops like jackfruits, sweet potatoes and colocasia, which are a rich source of nutrients.
World Food Day observed in Ri Bhoi
Joining the rest of the world, the office of the District Agriculture Officer, Ri Bhoi District, observed the World Food Day at Umjong village on Thursday, where hundreds of farmers participated in the programme with the theme ‘Family Farming’, ‘Feeding the World’ and ‘Care for the Earth’.
The programme was attended by K. Pyngrope, Deputy Director, State Soil Survey, G. Shylla, SDAO Agriculture, K.B Lakiang, ADH, Horticulture, S.F. Budnah, DFO, F.B. Kharsyntiew, ATMA, Project Director, along with other officials from the Agriculture and Horticulture department. The programme was presided over by S.K. Riahtam, DAO.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Pyngrope said that farmers play the most vital role in making the country self sufficient in food grains.
He also said that the endeavor of the government is to uplift the condition of the farmers and also to foster agricultural productivity, adding that, the Central and the State Government were implementing various schemes for the farmers and to boost agricultural activities so as to aim for eradication of hunger in the country.
Pyngrope also informed that the State Rice Mission, launched by the State Government last year with the emphasis to boost production of rice in the State, will be implemented in Ri Bhoi District very soon.
