Editor,
Apropos the letter to the editor “NGO Threats: Time to call their bluff” (ST Oct 15, 2014) by one Bill Syiem who had criticized the Union on the news item “RBSU warns NKC Pvt. Ltd for sacking local youth”. From the tone and tenor of the letter one can understand the mindset of the person and the fact that he dislikes all the NGOs of the State and that no one can question his opinion as India is a democratic country. However, when it comes to him criticizing the Union, it is evident that he did not go through the news item carefully but jumped to conclusions without knowing the facts. The issues here is not about the Union bullying and threatening the Company (NKC Pvt Ltd) until it was forced to wind up its operations and make away for an inept local contractor backed by the Union as alleged by him. The issue here is about the hardships faced by the locals who were working in different capacities to complete the Expressway Project who were terminated without any appropriate reasons due to which they had become jobless.
The Union appreciates the efforts of the State and the Central Govt. and such development projects are a boon to our State. However, the Union is of the belief that preference should be given to local people who are capable of carrying out this work in order to solve the unemployment problem prevailing in the State. If our unemployed youth are deprived of employment in their own backyard where do you think they’ll turn to for employment? Can Bill Syiem come up with any suggestions for generating employment for the local youth who were terminated and are being replaced by non-tribal labourers?.
Referring to his allegation of us (RBSU members) having flashy cars and flashy homes, we demand that he come up with substantial evidence and proofs and not make blanket statements at the cost of our reputation. Finally, the Union urges the general public not to be misled by the opinion of a single individual. Such a person should have done thorough homework on the background of all our members before jumping into any conclusion.

Editor,
Almost every human being requires milk right from childhood up to old age. Milk is an unavoidable drink for the majority of human beings either directly or while drinking tea or mixed with snacks, etc. Of late the Khasi Hills District Council has issued a dictum to all non tribal milkmen to close down their cattle- rearing and has refused to grant Trading License to them. If the milkmen stop rearing cattle, we will be deprived of this essential food item since even the Veterinary Department will have to shut down the Diary plant for want of milk. It may be noted that 90 % of milk processed by the Diary Plant comes from the non- tribal milkmen. It is ridiculous on the part of the KHADC to employ a Taliban like design of chasing away Indian non-tribals without taking into consideration the basic needs of the society. This uncivilized act of the KHADC will instead cause sufferings to the local citizens. Therefore, I would urge the likeminded members of society to do something to stop this Talibanization of the Khasi society. I would urge the Hon’ ble Governor of Meghalaya to bring the KHADC under Governor’s rule to prevent further suffering to the people of this part of the state.

Beware of NGO leaders
Editor,
The two letters written by Lawrence Tariang (Defending the indefensible ) and by AS Lyngdoh ( Amusing Rejoinder) as appeared in your esteemed daily (ST Oct 06, 2014) are very informative and interesting. For the benefit of the general public let me also share some of the incidents regarding the misdeeds of the self proclaimed leader of the CSWO. These are few samples extracted from my news paper clippings and also from privy information. First, Ms Agnest Kharshiing is not the legal head of the CSWO. This organization was registered under the Registration of Societies Act under the presidentship of Ms Irene Hujon. Nowhere in the official records of CSWO does the name of Ms Agnest Kharshiing figure. If Ms Agnes Kharshiing wants to become the legally elected president of the CSWO let her convene a general election of the women’s organization under strict supervision by an independent body. Continuing to be self styled leader with illiterate and motivated followers is highly suspicious in the eyes of the general public. This woman has exploited and caused mental trauma to a poor chowkidar of DC’s office Shillong in 2009-10 by interfering in his family affair. She even got him arrested on flimsy grounds and now the victim has lost his mental balance and is being nursed back to health by the Rani clan. I cannot imagine the future of our society if such an NGO continues to remain active and keeps on exploiting people.
Yours etc.,
Bidonbok M Rani.
