SHILLONG: The North-Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) has expressed its disappointment over the failure of the University to set up the CSIR-NET examination centre for the sciences here.
“We have been pursuing with the university authority on the need to set up CSIR-NET examination centre at NEHU, Shillong campus. However, due to undisclosed reasons this has failed to materialise till date,” NEHUSU vice president, Shiningstar Kharbhikhiew stated in a representation submitted to university Vice Chancellor, P Shukla on October 21.
According to him, the students are continuously subjected to financial, physical and mental hardships for appearing in the afore-mentioned examination at Guwahati, which is the nearest centre.
He said that the Union is of the opinion that the authorities should speed up the matter related to the setting up of a designated examination centre at NEHU adding that they should be informed about the progress in the matter.
M.Sc seats should be increased
The NEHUSU vice president also said that seats for the M.Sc programme should also be increased in view of the fact that the number of students enrolling for the programme has shot up.
NEHUSU vice president also complained that the procedure of conducting M Phil and PhD admissions varies from one department to other.
“For consistency and easy supervision of the admission process, a uniform methodology should be decided upon and implemented by the various departments,” he said adding that at least 50% of the seats should be reserved for NEHU students.
Demand for construction of hostels
The student leader also called for construction of at least six new hostels for UG, PG and research scholars to accommodate the rising number of students.
While expressing strong disappointment over the failure of the Transport department to perform as expected, he said that the irregularity and insufficiency of the bus services is a longstanding problem in the University which should be dealt with expeditiously.
“Fill up the vacant posts”
The NEHSU vice president also urged that several posts which are lying vacant at the moment should be filled with deserving candidates for the betterment of the student community.
Concern over behavior of faculty members
The Union also expressed grave concerns over the conduct of some faculty members as far as carrying out their academic responsibilities are concerned.
“Scholars in some departments are often traumatized over petty reasons by their supervisors, while some heads of departments, for various reasons, are also involved in unnecessary intimidations and intrusions into the research activities of scholars, other than their own, to the extent that fellowships are withheld or deductions are insisted on the fellowship amount,” he alleged adding that corrective measures should be taken to fix such issues after feedback from students.
