Do not forget past leaders’ contributions: Lapang

Bah Bring followed ‘one party, one wife and one peg’ mantra: Bindo

SHILLONG: Former Chief Minister DD Lapang has said that it is really sad to see the tendency among the people of the State to forget the contributions of the great leaders of the past.

The former Chief Minister has asserted that contributions of great leaders like the pioneer of the Sixth Schedule JJM Nicholas Roy, Late Edwin Bareh, Late Prof GG Swell and former Chief Minister Late BB Lyngdoh need to be recognized in a proper way.

“I am afraid that the younger generation will not have any knowledge about the contributions of these great leaders,” he said.

Lapang was speaking as one of the panelists at a memorial lecture organized by BB Lyngdoh Memorial Committee to commemorate the 11th death anniversary of the former Chief Minister at Dinam Hall, Jaiaw on Saturday.

The former Chief Minister said that the KHADC only recently realized the need to install a bust of JMM Nicholas Roy on the premises of the Council.

BB Lyngdoh passed away on October 27, 2003.

While recalling some of the contributions of former Chief Minister, Lapang revealed that “Bah Bring”, was instrumental in the setting up of the NEIGRIHMS in the State.

Lapang also recollected Bah Bring’s contributions towards the Hill State Movement.

In his speech, former Deputy Chief Minister Bindo Mathew Lanong termed Bah Bring as ‘fearless leader’.

“He even dares to call insurgent group as extortionist without thinking about the consequences. He (Bah Bring) will never entertain or pacify the insurgent groups,” Lanong said.

He also said that the former Chief Minister was also a man who believed in clean politics.

While revealing the famous of mantra of his life, he said that the former Chief Minister believed in ‘one party, one wife and one peg’ principle since he was never into drinking habit.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said that he (Bah Bring) was the architect of the MLA scheme.

Others who spoke on the occasion include former Minister and legislator Martle N Mukhim and Bah Bring’s daughter Syrpailin.
