Mysterious explosion injures one

Guwahati:One person was injured and a motorcycle damaged in a mysterious bomb explosion in Rajgarh-Zoo Road area here on Sunday night, police said. The ball-like palm size bomb exploded in front of some shops on the Apurba Sinha Path injuring one person standing there. The bomb was not an improvised explosive device but a powerful Diwali firecracker, police said. Journalists who visited the blast site, however, noticed splinters and small metal balls used in IEDs by militants lying scattered on the ground. Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police A P Tiwari said the type of the explosive would be known only after investigations. The victim, identified as Ratul Das, sustained injuries on his face and was taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital. Eyewitnesses to the blast said the ball-like explosive was lying on the ground and it got triggered by a discarded burning cigarette stub. The blast produced a loud sound and blinding light causing some of the people’s hair to be singed, the witnesses claimed. (PTI)

Bike Rally to herald Nagaland ACAUT Rally in Kohima

Kohima:As a precursor to the public rally of the Against Corruption And Unabated Taxation at Kohima on October 31, the Nagaland Motorcycle Club has announced to lead a motorcycle ride from Dimapur to Kohima on October 29 to show solidarity and support for the rally and the ACAUT movement on the theme ‘Riding toward change.’ According to a release issued by the Nagaland Motorcycle Club today the Committee has fervently appealed to all the concerned citizens with bikes to join the Nagaland Motorcycle Club in ‘this historic ride for change.’ The programme would be flagged off from City Tower in Dimapur on October 29, which will reach Kohima same day. After reaching TCP Gate at Kohima, the riders would be led by the organizers to the reception site. It may be mentioned here that a ‘Public Rally’ of the Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT), with the initiative of the Angami Public Organization (APO), Angami Youth Organization (AYO), Angami Students’ Union (ASU) and Kohima Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in commemoration of the first Anniversary of ACAUT Rally to be held at the Old MLA Hostel Junction in Kohima on 31st October next. Missing IOC officer found inside oil well compound

Guwahati:The missing Executive Director designate of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Kaushik Bora was found on Monday near a jungle inside the complex of an oil well near Digboi in Upper Assam, police said. Tinsukia Additional Superintendent of Police Lamhao Dongol said Bora was spotted this afternoon within just one kilometre from where his car was found last evening. “Bora was perfectly fine and was found towards the jungle side within the oil well compound in the area. It is not a case of kidnapping. What we could gather from our investigation is that he is suffering from depression and he went himself,” Dongol said. He said Bora’s wife had informed that he was taken to Apollo Hospital in New Delhi earlier this month. Bora, who was to be promoted to the post of Executive Director of the Digboi Refinery of IOC, left his home yesterday in the afternoon for work but no news of him was received till evening. His car was found from Digboi-Pengeri road near an oil well. (PTI)

Nagaland girl allegedly raped by Nigerian in Delhi

New Delhi:A girl from North-East on Monday alleged that she was raped by a Nigerian man in Northwest Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area. The 22-year-old victim, who hails from Nagaland, lodged a complaint with Delhi police and stated that she was allegedly raped by the 34-year-old Nigerian on the pretext of getting her job in the national capital. However, talking to UNI, Mukherjee Nagar SHO Veer Singh said the girl was in a live-in relationship with the man since December 2013. “When the man refused to marry her, she filed a complaint that he raped her. We have arrested the man last night and are investigating the whole matter further,” he added.(UNI)

70 labourers injured in bus mishap in Assam

Jorhat (Assam): Seventy labourers were injured when an over-crowded bus carrying them fell into a ditch on NH-37 here during week hours on Monday. According to Jorhat district SP Amanjeet Kaur, the bus was carrying 70 passengers from Barpeta to Tinsukia against its capacity of 35 persons. “The accident took place around 2:30 AM on NH-37 at Koliapani under Teok police station. Preliminary investigation suggests that it is a case of over speeding and over-loading, because of which the driver lost control,” she said. All the passengers have suffered injuries and they have been admitted to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital. The condition of 10 persons is stated to be critical, Kaur said. All the passengers were labourers and they were being transported for some construction work in Tinsukia. Yesterday, nine persons, including five women, were killed and 28 others injured when a bus fell into a ditch at Uluani in Nagaon district. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered an enquiry into the accident by the Secretary of Transport Department. (PTI)

Kohima:Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary, Higher & Technical Education Deo Nukhu has asked the students to make best use of their talents and said God has gifted everyone different talents, but cautioned against its misuse.  Speaking as the guest addressee during the formal session of the concluding day of the Students’ Spiritual Conference held at Agri Expo in Dimapur Mr Nukhu said the students that as students, you are preparing yourselves for the future.’  “Students need to work hard and be sincere. “This is a competitive world and there is no place for the lazy,” Nukhu added. The concluding day of the three-day student conference saw about 5000 in attendance. Rev. Dirang Lungalang, the Finance Convener of the Organizing Committee, called the student conference ‘an experience’ and expressed happiness at the success of the programme. (UNI)
