SHILLONG: As the retired Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court Justice Meena Kumari expressed her inability to head the Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) , the State Government has to start the exercise afresh to find a suitable person for the post.

Speaking to reporters here after a meeting of the panel constituted to select the chairperson and members of the Commission, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that the panel will now have to prepare a list of probables.

According to Sangma, the panel has already shortlisted the names of the members and the political department has been given the responsibility to hold talks with them.

It is learnt that Additional Deputy Commissioner MB Challam has agreed to be one of the members of the Commission.

During the Assembly session held in March this year, the Government had tabled the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (Salaries and Allowances and other Terms and Conditions of Service of the Members) Rules, 2014.

It was on August 13 last year that the State Cabinet had approved the formation of the State Human Rights Commission.
