IA & AD to host East Zone badminton tourney

SHILLONG: The Indian Audit & Accounts department will host the East zone badminton tournament from November 5 to 7 at U Tirot Sing Syiem Indoor stadium, Lower, Lachumiere in Shillong. All the IA & AD offices of the Eastern part of India and North Eastern states will be participating in the tournament.

ICC People’s Choice Award trophy showcased in Noida

Noida: The ICC’s LG People’s Choice award was today brought face-to-face with Indian cricket fans by the consumer durables brand at an exclusive preview of the Trophy here. The LG People’s Choice Award is a category that recognises the best Cricketing talent of the year, voted by fans from across the globe. The fifth edition of LG People’s Choice award has five players from the similar number of countries nominated to win the only award voted for and by the public at the annual Awards. This year, the nominees are England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson, Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews and South African fast bowler Dale Steyn. Top Kenyan marathon star Jeptoo tests positive for EPO

Nairobi: The world’s top female marathon runner, Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo, has tested positive for the blood blood-boosting drug EPO, an official told on Friday. The revelation, which casts a shadow over Kenya’s status as a distance-running powerhouse, came after World Marathon Majors organisers said they were postponing the awarding of this year’s prize to 33-year-old Jeptoo following a report she had tested positive from blood-boosting drug Erythropoietin (EPO). Jeptoo is currently the world’s top female marathon runner, having won the Chicago marathon twice and Boston three times, including in 2013 when she set the course record of 2hr 18min 57sec – the eighth-best female marathon time of all time. Durand Cup: Pune blank Churchill, United down AI

Margao: A dominant Pune FC scored a thumping 3-0 win over Churchill Brothers in a Group D quarter-final league match of the 127th Durand Cup football tournament here today. With most of the key players leaving Churchill Brothers after All India Football Federation deprived them of playing in the I-League for failing to meet the club licensing criteria, the team lacked thrust in the midfield and attack. On the other hand, Pune FC dominated proceedings with Sueoka Ryuji leading attack as the visitors kept the pressure on the home team with repeated forays before surging ahead in the seventh minute. While in another match, United SC came from behind to down Air India 2-1 in the group B quarter-final league match. (PTI)

Austrian cyclist sets new world hour record

Paris: Matthias Brandle of Austria set a new cycling world hour record with his 51.85-km effort, adding more than 700 metres to the old mark set by Germany’s Jens Voigt last month. Brandle, three-time Austrian time-trial champion, set the new record at Switzerland’s Aigle velodrome on Thursday, reports Xinhua. “I knew after 30 minutes that I was going to succeed,” said the 24-year-old. “The first minutes were easy and then I wanted to go a lot faster. Halfway through, things became more complicated and I started to feel pain.” “I am very happy with the result.” (IANS)

PCB names U-21 women’s tournament after Malala

Karachi: On the initiative of newly-appointed PCB Chairman, Shaharyar Khan, the Board authorities have named the inaugural Under-21 National Women Cricket Championship after Nobel peace laureate Malala Yousafzai. The Pakistan Cricket Board today dedicated the U-21 women’s event, to be held in December this year with 12 regional teams in action, to Malala. Shaharyar said naming the tournament after Malala would inspire women cricketers to excel further. (PTI)

Tendulkar’s son Arjun set to tour SA with Mumbai club

Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar’s Arjun will be leading a Mumbai club Worli CC’s U-18 side to South Africa for a pre-season exposure tour that starts on November 2. This is Tendulkar junior’s second exposure tour to South Africa. The left-handed batsman was the top scorer during Worli CC’s last visit to South Africa, where he impressed one and all with some good knocks. Worli CC are scheduled to play 10 limited overs matches of 45 overs-a-side against some top schools in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Potchefstroom. It has been learnt that the club organizes such trips for youngsters so that they get a chance to experience the pace. (PTI)
