Parliamentary committee issues directive to PSUs

SHILLONG: The Parlia-mentary Standing Committee (PSC) on Personnel, Public Grievances and Law has served a six-month ultimatum to all the Central government institutions and departments in Meghalaya to fill up all the backlog vacancies in line with prescribed reservation policy.

“We have stressed on the implementation of the reservation system for schedule tribe (ST), schedule caste (ST), OBC and differently-abled persons, especially for the blind category, for filling up all the vacant posts within a period of 6 months,” the PSC chairman EM Sudarsana Natchiappan said here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference, Natchiappan said that the Committee had consultations with the officials of NEEPCO, NERAMAC and other organisations on the issue of filling up the vacancies.

The Committee also asked the PSUs to submit their action-taken report on the matter to it.

Judicial academy: The Committee also stressed on setting up of a state judicial academy in the Northeastern states.

Natchiappan said that the Committee felt that the setting up of a state judicial academy would further strengthen tribal justice system. The Committee has recommended two places — Guwahati and Sikkim-for setting up of this academy

“We want to initiate the process under the 13th or 14th Finance Commission,” he said.

On Saturday, the Committee met the State Governor KK Paul and Chief Minister Mukul Sangma. The committee also held separate meetings with the members of the Shillong High Court Bar Association and the District Council.

The Committee has also recommended that tribal customary law and customary justice should be allowed to grow and nurture.

It may be mentioned that the 12-member committee is on a study visit to Shillong and the committee is studying on synergy on tribal justice system and regular justice system.
