BSF recovers 22 kg heroin in Punjab, three arrested
Amritsar:Border Security Force (BSF) troopers Sunday arrested three smugglers and recovered 22 kg of heroin along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, officials said.Earlier reports quoted BSF sources as saying that one smuggler was shot dead and two others were arrested, and 22 kg of heroin was seized from the Dera Baba Nanak sector. A BSF spokesman later said all the three arrested smugglers are Indian nationals. One pistol, ammunition, and Pakistani SIM cards were recovered from them. The heroin seized is valued at Rs.110 crore in the international markets, the official said. The seizure was made in the border out-post of Boharwadala area of Gurdaspur sector.The BSF has seized over 305 kg of heroin this year in Punjab.Punjab shares a 553-km-long international border with Pakistan.(IANS)
BJP govt failed to curb crime in Raj: Cong leader Beniwal
Bikaner:Former state Home Minister Virendra Beniwal on Sunday alleged that the BJP government has “failed to curb crime” in the last eleven months of its rule and were “unable to provide fearless atmosphere” to the people in Rajasthan. Crime was rising as the BJP government failed to curb the activities of anti-social elements indulged in loot, rape, murder and robberies besides rampant corruption in government machinery, Beniwal told villagers yesterday at Lunkaransar, his old constituency. BJP government turned insensitive towards public security and rising crime in the state as loot, murder, and rape were being played openly by criminals, the Congress leader added. Unable to provide fearless atmosphere, the Raje government was neither providing basic amenities like free medical and health services, pension, water, and power to people, he said. (PTI)
Woman, three others arrested for robbing train passengers
Chandauli:Four persons, including a 28-year-old woman, have been arrested in Mughalsarai area here for allegedly robbing train passengers, police said here on Sunday. Raju, Firoz, Dayanand and Jhumri Devi were arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP) yesterday for carrying out loots with railway passengers, GRP inspector of Mughalsarai Ratan Singh Yadav said. All four were nabbed at the Mughalsarai railway station at night, he added. The gang operated between different railway stations. They have been in the activity for many years, he said. Cash, six mobile phones and jewellery robbed from the passengers have been recovered by the police. (PTI)
Naval chief to visit Kenya
New Delhi:Naval chief Admiral R K Dhowan will leave on a five-day visit to Kenya to progress and consolidate defence relations with the Indian Ocean Region country. India and Kenya have enjoyed historical maritime linkages since many centuries. The visit by the Chief of the Naval Staff will not only cement existing maritime linkages but will also explore avenues to build more bridges of friendship, a statement released by the Navy said. India already has an ongoing and fruitful bilateral engagement with Kenya. Apart from regular ship visits, the Indian Navy has been extending training support to the Kenyan Navy. India has also extended hydro-graphic survey assistance to Kenya and Indian Navy survey ships have recently carried out significant surveys of Kenyan waters. One of the highlights of the visit is presentation of ‘first updated navigational chart’ of the areas by the CNS to Kenyan authorities. This survey was conducted by INS Jamuna, a survey ship which is currently deployed on East African coast on a hydro-graphic mission. (PTI)
Youth commits suicide after stabbing girl
Krishnagar:A college student allegedly committed suicide after stabbing a girl with a sharp edged weapon in Nadia district on Sunday, police said.Shubhankar Pramanick, a BA second year student attacked a girl who was going for private tuition at Pratappur with a sharp edged weapon at around 8 am, the police said. After stabbing the girl, the youth took her scarf and fled. The locals took the injured girl to Krishnaganj hospital.The youth allegedly hanged himself from a mango tree with the scarf of the girl, the police said. The girl has been discharged from hospital after treatment, they said.Both the youth and the girl belongs to Pratappur area of the district.The locals alleged that the youth was in love with the girl but the girl was avoiding him.
