SHILLONG: Unfazed by the lack of positive response to its earlier plans of producing energy from wastes, the State Government is now contemplating the idea of producing fuel from waste.
Confirmed sources from the Urban Affairs department admitted that the Department had experimented with the concept of converting waste to energy but it was not yielding any positive results and there were indications that it would not be able to sustain itself.
“With regards to the Marten we had so many problems because when the technology was brought in we did not look at its commercial viability,” the sources said, adding that the amount of waste generated in the city was not matching the expected requirement for commercial production of energy.
The sources also revealed that the earlier proposed waste to energy project would have benefited the State a lot since the integration project would have helped in generating at least four megawatts of much-needed power.
The sources informed that the department would explore the idea of converting waste to fuel, particularly diesel.
It is learnt that Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh would pay a visit to Bengaluru soon to study the metros’ success story in converting waste to fuel.
