Party’s State gen secy deplores harassment to public
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya BJP has termed the recent verification drive by police against people at odd hours of the day as inhumane.
Speaking to reporters here, BJP State general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said that though they welcome the move of the police to conduct such drives, they should change their method since the drives actually result in harassment to many people.
He also spoke against the manner in which the verification drives were conducted at dawn when all were sleeping.
Arguing that police should adopt alternate ways and means to conduct the verification, Chakraborty said that the Government should have some ‘civilized mentality’ by conducting such drives in a proper manner and without harassing people.
“The State Home Minister is from Shillong and she should direct police to conduct such drives in a proper manner which would be more effective,” he said.
It may be reminded that the district administration and the police had conducted verification drives at Fourth Furlong and Pynthorbah areas near Polo Grounds and picked up 684 persons.
Days later, police conducted a similar drive at Jhalupara and Mawbah and detained 815 suspected migrant workers.
Fresh verification drive in city
Meanwhile, in an anti-infiltration verification drive at Mawlonghat, Cantonment and Sweeper’s Colony in the city on Saturday, a total of 963 ‘suspected’ people were picked up out of whom 873 produced proper documents and were accordingly released.
According to police, 90 persons who did not have any proper documents were released with a direction that they should return to the Cantonment Beat House within seven days with all valid documents.
