1 killed in TMC-BJP clash in Birbhum

Suri (WB): One person was killed and another injured on Sunday in a clash between supporters of ruling Trinamool Congress and BJP at Parui in Birbhum district, the police said. Sheikh Jasim, suspected to be a BJP supporter of Chowmondalpur village, was shot dead early this morning when they were attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress members in the village, the police said. Superintendent of Police Birbhum Alok Rajoria visited the village on Sunday. The body was brought to Suri Sadar Hospital for post-mortem, hospital authorities said. Sporadic clashes between the supporters of the rival political parties have taken place at the villages of Sirsita, Chowmondalpur and Jadabpur in Parui since last night. Large police contingents have been carrying out search operations and raiding the hideouts of the warring party supporters in the villages. Incidents of random bombing, firing from countrymade guns and looting have been reported from the villages, the police said. One person also suffered bullet wounds in the leg at Sirista village in a clash last night, the police said. (PTI)

18 devotees injured in road mishap

Perambalur (TN):Eighteen devotees were on Sunday injured after a van in which they were travelling collided with a lorry near here, police said. The Lord Ayyappan devotees, hailing from Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu, were heading towards the Sabarimala hill shrine of of Lord Ayyappa in Kerala when the incident happened at Chinnaru in the morning, they said. Iron rods from the lorry pierced the front windshield of the van. All the 18 devotees in the van were injured. Eleven of them, including two seriously injured, had been hospitalised while the others were treated as out patients, police said. The seriously injured has been shifted to the government hospital in neighbouring Tiruchirappalli while others were undergoing treatment at the local government hospital, they said. The driver of the lorry has been detained as it was an offence carry such long iron pipes without mandatory precautionary red signs, they said.(PTI)

No ‘Kiss of Love’ protest in Bhopal

Bhopal: The ‘Kiss of Love’ protest against moral policing, planned by some college students, was not held here on Sunday as police maintained a strict vigil to prevent any such event from happening. A number of students had earlier planned to protest near Shahpura lake in the city on Sunday. There was no ‘Kiss of Love’ protest in Shahpura area on Sunday, City Superintendent of Police Jayant Singh Rathore told PTI. Some of the organisers were earlier reportedly picked up by police and warned. According to some organisers, following pressure from some right-wing organisations they held a meeting on Saturday and dropped the plan to hold the protest. However, one of the organisers said they had put off their plan to protest as some students were busy with examinations and refused to comment any further. Meanwhile, people participated in ‘Raahgiri’ at the Shahpura lake in the city today. Azra Khan, of NGO Embarq which promotes ‘Raahgiri’ said their aim is to discourage vehicular traffic and encourage walking for a healthy environment by organising such events. (PTI)

Victims demand arrest in Muzaffarnagar riots

Muzaffarnagar:The riot victims gheraoed the Shahpur police station and submitted a memorandum to state Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav demanding the arrest of the absconding accused in connection with communal killings at Kutba village here, the police said. The victims on Saturday have staged demonstration and also threatened to go on a hunger strike from December 1, if their demands are not fulfilled by the state government, police said. Protesting under the banner of Riot Action Committee, the rehabilitated victims along with the members of Bhartiya Kisan Masdoor Manch (BKMM) had taken out a protest march on Saturday from Palda village to Shahpur pressing for their demands. Riots victims were protesting against failure of the state government to arrest the riots accused, even after a year has passed for the riots, BKMM president Gulam Mohammad Jolla said. “Several gram pradhan’s (village heads) of the affected villages took part in the protest,” he said. Villagers have alleged that the accused persons are not being arrested due to pressure from a union minister.  (PTI)

Body of former SP MLA found in hotel

Etah: Body of a former SP MLA was on Sunday recovered from a hotel room in Kotwali area here, a senior police officer said. “Body of the former MLA Anaar Singh Diwakar was recovered from room number 402 of Shikhar hotel this morning,” Additional Superintendent of Police Visarjan Singh said. Though the cause of his death was not clear, the family members of Diwakar allege murder. Senior police officers, including SSP Surendra Kumar Verma, have reached the spot. Diwakar was elected from Jalesar constituency to Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on SP ticket in 2002. He later contested Lok Sabha election from Hathras as SP candidate in 2009, but was defeated. In 2012 Assembly elections, he contested again on Congress ticket. He was recently re-inducted into SP by party national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav. (PTI)

Father beheads his two sons under alcohol’s influence

Fatehabad (Har): A man, who was under the influence of alcohol, was arrested for allegedly beheading his two sons with a sharp-edged weapon while they were asleep here, police said on Sunday. Sheepal alias Pala, a resident of village Kharati Khera of Fatehabad, allegedly beheaded his two sons Sadeek (21) and Salim (18) with sharp weapon yesterday night at his residence, police added. The city police arrested the accused and registered a case of murder against him, DSP Vijay Kakar said. Police said the accused was addicted to alcohol and was drunk when he attacked his children. At the time of the incident the mother of two youths was away at her daughter’s residence, they said. (PTI)
