SHILLONG: The Garo Students’ Union Ri Bhoi Regional Unit, Byrnihat has alleged that CMJ Beverages Ltd (beer factory) located at Rajabagan, Byrnihat, has been disposing its hazardous chemical wastes into the Umtrew (Digaru) river.

The GSU said that people from different villages had complained to them on the matter following which they had taken up the matter with the DFO, Nongpoh, with an appeal to take strict action against the company.

According to the GSU, Umtrew river is the only source of drinking water for the villagers and there were reports that several animals had died after drinking water from the river.

The GSU said that earlier it had conducted an inspection of the river and had asked the company head not to dispose wastes into the river but the company has remained adamant on the issue.
