Burdwan blast case

Guwahati: Six persons arrested from Assam’s Barpeta district for their alleged involvement in the Burdwan blast were on Tuesday sent back to judicial custody for 14 more days.

They were produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court at the end of their 14-day judicial custody during the day and were sent back to jail for an equal period.

The six are the father-son duo of Shiraj Ali Khan and Shaikhul Islam, Rafikul Islam, Jahuruddin, Golam Osmani and Sarbesh Ali. They are residents of different villages in Barpeta district.

They were arrested on October 10 based on investigations that they are a part of a module operating under the patronage of Jamatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

A case was registered under Special Operation Unit police station the day before. Shaikhul Islam alias Abdulla is an important member of the module operating in Assam and an associate of Shakil Ahmed alias Shamin, a JMB activist who died in the October 2 blast, according to the police.

He had been trained in jihad in madrasas at Simulia in Burdwan and in Murshidabad and instructions had been allegedly given to him to look for potential Muslim youths to be motivated for jihad, the police has said.

Shakil Ahmed had visited Barpeta several times under the cover of conducting garment business, it has said.

NIA, which is probing the blast case, had searched the house at Barpeta of absconding Sahanur Alom alias Doctor, one of the main accused in the case, and seized some documents, coins from Arabic countries and bank passbooks.

Sahanur Alom’s wife Sujana Begam was arrested from the ISBT here on November 6 and is in police custody. (PTI)
