Cobalt machine out of order, no treatment for cancer patients

SHILLONG: Hundreds of cancer patients at Shillong Civil Hospital are without treatment for the last three days due to the fault in the cobalt machine, which is used for the radiation therapy.

The relatives of the patients informed that they were at a loss since the cobalt machine has not been functioning since Monday.

At least 70 patients frequent daily at the radiation therapy department (radiation oncology) o f the Shillon g Civil Hospital.

After the department was set up in 2006, the cobalt machine was installed to enable the patients to have radiation therapy.

The Shillong civil hospital caters to the needs of cancer patients of the entire state, and moreover patients from neighbouring states also frequent the hospital for treatment.

A hospital source said that the Government is yet to call the engineer from Kolkata to repair the machine.
