Guwahati: Assam’s first time Congress MP and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s son, Gaurav Gogoi, has selected martyr Swahid Kushal Konwar’s vil-lage Gondhokoroi in Golaghat district for making it a model village.

Gogoi wants to make Gondhokoroi 100 per cent organic and his plan include involving the school chil-dren of the village in growing organic vegetables in their school playground.

Gogoi announced on Wednesday that he would invite international NGOs to provide organic certifica-tion to the growers and Self Help Groupswill be formed to produce village level vermin-composting units.

Young model farmers will be identified and they will be send to Thailand to study modern cultivation, he added. “My dream is to have several organic model villages across the state.

Kushal Konwar was a freedom fighter from Assam and was hanged during last phase of the Quit India Movement of 1942-43 for his suspected role in the derailment of a military train in which British and American soldiers were killed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled Saa-nsad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) on October 11 asking MPs to coordi-nate convergence of existing rural develop-ment schemes in the village using existing schemes’ funds and their MP Local Area Develop-ment Fund (MPLAD).

MPs have been asked to focus on and develop one village from their consti-tuency as a model village by 2016, and two more by 2019 covering over 2,500 villages of 6 lakh villages country-wide. (PTI)
