Govt sends senior cops to Garo Hills

SHILLONG: The State government has deputed several senior police officials to Garo Hills to review and take stock of the situation in view of Tuesday’s IED blast which claimed two police personnel.

This was informed by Home Minister Roshan Warjri here on Wednesday.

Head constables Aldrin Lygdoh and Akilson Marak were killed and another three were injured when an IED planted by the militants went off near a road close to Rewak while they were travelling towards Baghmara from Siju area in the district.

Warjri termed the killing of two police personnel as ‘cold blooded, gruesome and inhumane”.

In a statement, Warjri said that the barbaric activities being carried out by these militant groups must be condemned in the strongest terms.

The Home Minister also extended her condolences to the bereaved families.

She also wished a speedy recovery to the police personnel, Medison Sangma, Betherson Sangma and Brething K Sangma who were injured in incident.

GNLA militants nabbed

Meanwhile, two suspected GNLA militants have been arrested in North Garo Hills district with arms during a raid at Rongrong area under Bajengdoba police station on Wednesday.

The arrest comes close on the heels of an attack by GNLA militants in south Garo Hills district where two police personnel were killed in an IED blast and three others seriously injured on Tuesday afternoon.

The joint operation by East and north Garo Hills police with support from CRPF CoBRA units led to the arrest of Malseng T Sangma (32) of Bajengdoba and Tengpan N Sangma (25) of Rongrong.

From their possession police recovered one 7.65 mm pistol with a magazine containing three live rounds, two airguns, a Sony handycam, GNLA handbook, a Nokia X@ cell phone with two SIM cards and a Bajaj CT-100 motorcycle.
