Surrendered militants launch hunger strike in Tripura

Agartala:Peeved by government apathy, 26 surrendered militants have launched a hunger strike at Lachi Rehabilitation Camp in south Tripura’s Santir Bazar sub-division, official sources said on Wednesday. The surrendered militants, who are undergoing vocational training, have been demanding BPL cards and loans from government departments. Having failed to draw the attention of administration, all inmates of the camp began hunger strike on their 20-point charter of demands on Tuesday. Sub Divisional Magistrate Uttam Mandal met the surrendered militants and appealed to them to withdraw their agitation. “I have requested them to roll back their hunger strike as the government is ready to consider their demands, whatever they have,” the SDM said. According to rehabilitation agreement, all the surrendered militants have been provided a package comprising a fixed deposit of Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 3,500 monthly stipend for each returnee. “If they need more assistance for rehabilitation, the administration will consider their demands so that they could lead a decent life,” the SDM said.(PTI)

663 committed suicide in nine years in Mizoram

Aizawl:At least 663 people have committed suicide over the past nine years in Mizoram, with depression identified as the main cause, a report said on Wednesday. An Aizawl-based NGO, New Life Charity Society (NeLICS), recorded and analysed these deaths between September 2005 and October 2014. “The main cause of suicide in Mizoram is depression and the majority of the people who commit such acts belong to the youth category,” Zawmsanga Sailo, NeLICS chairman, told reporters Wednesday. NeLICS records show most victims were between 15 and 45 years.”Seventy-five percent of the suicides in the nine years were committed by males.” The oldest person who committed suicide was a 86-year-old man while the youngest was an eight-year-old boy.Zawmsanga said the misuse of technological advancement in the form of mobile phones among the young had largely attributed to suicides.(IANS)

Extortionists overpowered by locals

Itanagar:Two extortionists were overpowered by locals in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh and handed over to the police. They were arrested on Tuesday morning after the locals handed over to a police team. The duo, identified as Brasan Doimary and Alhen Doimary were demanding ransom in Tengabari area under Balijan police station, Papum Pare SP P N Khrimey said on Wednesday. They were allegedly serving extortion notices to businessmen of the area. Brasan hails from Gohpur area while his accomplice Alhen was from Udalguri in neighbouring Assam, the SP said. State Home Minister Tanga Byaling Arunachal on Wednesday lauded the public of Balijan for overpowering the extortionists with the help of local police. Byaling said and exhorted the civil society to inform the police in case of any extortion demand. “Cooperate with the police in your own interest. The police force is alert and alive to such issues,” he said. (PTI)

25 Mizoram officers have Vigilance cases against them

Aizawl:Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla on Wednesday said there are 25 gazetted officers working in the state government who have vigilance case against them. Replying to a question from Lalrinawma of the Mizo National Front (MNF) in the Assembly, Lal Thanhawla said those having vigilance cases included a chief engineer of the public works department, director of a department, two executive engineers, two doctors and one state police service officer. He also said 3,655 gazetted officers have submitted property returns to the state Vigilance Department. (PTI)

12 AR personnel injured in militant attack in Manipur

Imphal, Nov 19 (PTI) At least 12 Assam Rifles personnel were injured in an IED attack by unidentified militants at Kambiron in Manipur’s interior Tamenglong district, official sources said on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday when the security men were returning to the headquarters, the sources said quoting delayed reports from the district. The militants had exploded improvised explosive devices(IED), it said. The injured were taken to the Army hospital at Leimakhong, about 25 km from here. The condition of six of the security men was stated to be serious by the hospital authorities. (PTI)
