CM yet to accept Home Minister’s resignation letter

SHILLONG: Congress legislator Roshan Warjri has virtually ruled out the possibility of withdrawing her resignation even as Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told the State Assembly on Friday that he would try to convince the Home Minister to reconsider her decision.

Warjri’s resignation was confirmed by the Chief Minister in the Assembly on Friday when the NPP leader James Sangma wanted to know whether the Home minister had resigned from the Cabinet as per The Shillong Times report.

Sangma, while admitting that he received the resignation letter of Home Minister on Thursday afternoon, however, asserted that he has not accepted her resignation.

“It is a fact that the Home Minister submitted her resignation letter on Thursday afternoon. I tried to prevail on her to continue in office and I have not accepted her resignation letter”, Sangma said.

Later, speaking to media persons after the session, Sangma said that he would talk to the Home Minister with a hope that she would re-consider her decision.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued to the media a day after her unexpected resignation, Warjri made it clear that she decided to resign owning moral responsibility for the escalating law and order situation in the State particularly in Garo Hills region. According to her, in the last 20 months she tried to fulfill the responsibilities as desired by her office to the best of her ability. She also praised the leadership quality of the Chief Minister.

“Under the dynamic leadership of the Chief Minister, the Government has initiated many developmental, social and economic programmes and the historic Agreed Peace Settlement was reached with the ANVC and the ANVC (B) while peace initiatives with the HNLC are being taken forward,” the former Home Minister said

She recalled that the recent incidents of senseless violence and unlawful activities in the State, particularly in Garo Hills, have claimed innocent civilian lives including those of noble uniformed police personnel, while attending to the call of duty in the enforcement of law and restoring peace and security. “I deeply empathize with their families,” Warjri said.

There were a series of killings in Garo Hills resulting in undue hardships to the relatives of the slain police men and other innocent civilians in Garo Hills which had prompted the Home Minister to quit the post as she was contemplating to do so for a long time.
