Cong, BJP workers clash when party candidates debate
Jamshedpur:Congress and BJP supporters clashed here when their respective candidates were taking part in an open-air debate organised by a television channel, the police said on Sunday. The programme was organised last night to hold a debate among the candidates of Jamshedpur East and Jamshedpur West assembly seats before the assembly polls. Everything was going on smoothly with party candidates including Saryu Rai of BJP, Upendra Singh of JMM and Abhay Singh of Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) taking part in the discussion. BJP and Congress supporters started raising slogans in support of their party candidates and Jharkhand Agriculture Minister Banna Gupta, who arrived at late, the police said. The programme was disrupted when supporters engaged in a clash damaging chairs, podium and mikes. Rajesh Tomar, Jharkhand Head of the television channel said an FIR has been lodged as a costly chordless mike went missing following the incident. The party candidates taking part in the debate were rescued unharmed by the supporters and police. (PTI)
Man killed as two gangs exchange fire
Indore:A 28-year-old bystander died in firing between two gangs at Azad Nagar area here, police said on Sunday. “The incident occurred last night when one Nasir Khan alias Gammu was on his way home, along with his son Waseem, after his release on bail in a criminal case,” said SP (East City) O P Tripathi. The SP said Khan and his supporters were fired upon by members of the rival gang, here following old enmity, when they were passing Azad Nagar area, which was returned by them. In the exchange of fire, one Javed Khan, who was sipping tea at a stall in the area, was hit by a bullet and died, the SP said, adding that security has been beefed up in the area in the wake of the incident. Police have arrested two persons in connection with the case.(PTI)
Seven killed in Himachal bus accident
Shimla:Seven people were killed Sunday when a privately-owned mini-bus rolled down a gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district, police said. Nine people were injured in the accident which took place near Haripurdhar in Sangrah, one of the remotest areas in the state, some 95 km from district headquarters Nahan. The bus was going to Baddi town in Solan district from Ratwa village, Additional Superintendent of Police N.S. Negi told IANS over the phone. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained, he added. Most of the victims were locals. Officials said the toll could rise as some more passengers might be trapped in the wreckage.(IANS)
Tribal student commits suicide over torture by teacher
Jaipur:Blaming his school teacher for torture and manhandling, a 16-year-old tribal boy allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Baran district, police said on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Dilkush Sahariya, a student of class 10th at the Government Secondary School at Banthuni village, police said, adding, he committed suicide by hanging himself with a wooden rod yesterday. In an FIR lodged this morning with Bhanwargarh police station in Baran district, his parents submitted a suicide note in which the deceased alleged that he was beaten up, tortured and harassed by school teacher Mukut Sen, hence he was taking the extreme step. A case under section 306 of IPC for abetment to suicide against the teacher has been registered, they said, adding the probe was on to interrogate the school administration. Deceased’s body was handed over to the parents after post-mortem late last night. (PTI)
Man held for posing as RAW officer
Mathura:The police have arrested one person who posed as a RAW officer in a bid to release a criminal from a jail here. The cheat is identified as Navneet Rana and was arrested on Saturday, Dy SP Anil Yadav said. Rana came to the jail here, claiming to be Additional Secretary in RAW and met Yadav. However, the Dy SP developed doubt when Rana questioned about the police action to send criminal Rajesh Tota to jail and said that he is inocent. “I immediately told about him to SSP Manjil Saini who, after getting his identity verified through LIU from RAW Headquarters, instructed me to get him arrested as he was a bogus person,” he added. Tota is a hardened criminal and shooter who is involved in nearly two dozen cases of loot, murder, dacoity etc and is locked in jail, he said. (PTI)
