The song composed to raise money for fight against Ebola has made it to the top at UK music charts. The charity single sold more than 312,000 copies last week, making it 2014’s fastest-selling single so far, reported BBC.
Singer Bob Geldof, who along with artists like Bono, boy band One Direction, Rita Ora and others recorded the song, thanked the nation and said he was proud. The stars recorded the single as a part of charity supergroup Band Aid, which was founded in 1984 by Geldof, 63, and Midge Ure to raise money for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia by releasing the song ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’.
It is the fourth version of the track to be released. Geldof said the UK version of the song is also number one in France and other versions are number one in 61 countries. “I expected it, but did I expect it in such vast and willing numbers? No,” he said. All proceeds from the song go towards the fight against Ebola in West Africa.
The remaining of the UK top five consisted mainly of new entries including ‘Real Love from Clean Bandit FT Jess Glynne’ entering at number two, Olly Murs’ ‘Wrapped Up FT Travie McCoy’ at three, David Guetta at number five with ‘Dangerous FT Sam Martin’, while Ed Sheeran’s former number one ‘Thinking Out Loud’ dropped two places to number four.(PTI)
