Beijing: Nine people were wounded on Thursday by a knife-wielding man who went berserk and attacked them near a supermarket in southern China, the fifth such incident this month in the country.

A man in his twenties attacked people near a Hualian supermarket in Jiangnan District of Nanning, capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Nine people were injured in the attack. State-run Xinhua news agency reported that a suspect has been caught by the police and a probe has been launched.

A host of knife attacks by disgruntled elements have been reported in China, mostly targeting children.

Officials routinely blame such incidents on poor mental status of the attackers.

This is the fifth reported knife attack this month. Last week, eight persons were killed in two separate knife attacks in Tianjin Chengjian University and in People’s Liberation Army in Beidaihe district.

On November 16, a child was killed and another seriously injured when a woman went on a stabbing spree in Beihai City of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Another attacker, stabbed to death a girl and injured another in Langgudun Village of Xuzhou City on November 3. (PTI)
